Lockerbie

2025

Beginning production in 2024, this project represented a shift in pace for me. I was tasked with developing a proof-of-concept on-set virtual production tool, working within a limited budget while supporting a production dealing with historically sensitive subject matter related to Lockerbie bombing.

Because of the need for historical accuracy and careful visual planning, our goal was to explore how virtual production workflows could be integrated into the pre-production and on-set planning stages. The aim was to give directors and VFX supervisors clearer insight into the scope of set extensions, environments, and visual effects before and during principal photography.

To achieve this, we developed a virtual recreation of Lockerbie, which could be brought directly onto set as an interactive planning tool. This virtual environment allowed the director and VFX team to visualise complex shots, plan camera placements, and better understand how digital extensions would integrate with practical sets and locations.

Beyond pre-production planning, the virtual Lockerbie environment also became a valuable post-visualisation tool. By quickly generating VFX previews, we were able to support decision-making during shoot days, helping the director evaluate coverage, staging, and the feasibility of certain fx before committing to more expensive production or post-production work.

This approach allowed the team to prototype ideas, validate shot concepts and avoid uncertainty during filming while maintaining sensitivity to the real-world events being portrayed.

Tools used: Unreal Engine 5 / Maya / Embergen
